Here's the rudder work I've been doing. Filled the blind rivets and seam yesterday and sanded it down today. You can also see my sanding scuff marks by the counterweight/main skin seam. I'm filling this with epoxy to smooth it out, too. Maybe that'll get me an extra 1/100 of a knot when it's all done :) Well, it'll look nicer anyways...
And here it is all filled up. I'm guessing it'll take 2 or 3 fills/sands to get it just right...
I think the best way to do these tips is to do them all at once... There is so much filling and sanding to do, and it really doesn't take all that long in each session. I end up throwing out all kinds of epoxy, even though I'm only doing 1 squirt worth each time and filling everything I can. So, I haven't really been taking pictures of it all, as it's pretty repetitive stuff, but keep in mind I'm pretty much working on every tip, every day (every day that I've been working on something, that is).
Anyways, here's the solution to the 'just slightly too fat' tip. The one thing I do like about fiberglass, is that if you screw up (at least on these non-structural parts) there's nothing that some sandpaper and epoxy/bead filler can't fix. :) This tip was close enough that I could sand it down to fit right. So it's a little thin there, but it's still rigid, so I'm happy with it and it keeps me from having to do this one a third time as well... And as usual, you can see the fresh layer of filler on the seam and blind rivets here, too.
